Chemical Reaction and Equations
(Class 10)
Hey guys, welcome back to our site KNOWELDGEONET - A place to learn new things..
So in this post we are going to discuss about the introductive part of your 1st chapter of Science.
So let us start with few examples for your better understandings and to recall some of your knowledge.
▪ Examples of changes in our daily Life:
1. Melting of ice
This means ice ➡ water
H2O ➡ H2o
Which emplies ' no new substance'
2. Evaporation of water
Liquid ➡ gas
H20 ➡ H2O
' no new substance formed. '
▪Examples of chemical changes:
1. Turning of freshly cut apples to brown colour in the air.
2. Souring of milk in Summer.
3. Digestion of food in human body.
4. Fermentation of grapes.
▪ Chemical Reaction :
A process in which the substances taken lose their nature and identity to form new chemical substances with different properties i.e., a process which involves a chemical change is called a chemical reactions.
▪ Reactants and Products :
Reactants :- The chemical substances taken originally which may react together is called recatants.
Simply the L.H.S side of a reaction.
Product :- The chemical substances taken originally which may react together and form new chemical substances are called Products.
Simply the R.H.S side of a reaction.
Example :
carbon + oxygen ➡ carbon di oxide.
........... Reactants.......... ......... Product..........
▪ Characteristics of chemical reactions :
1. Formation of a precipitate
2. Evolution of gas.
3. Change in colour.
4. Change in state.
5. Change in temperature.
- Exothermic Reaction : When heat is evolved in a reaction and the temperature rises.
- Endothermic Reaction : When heat is absobed in a reaction and the temperature falls.
# What is a chemical equation?
1. In terms of words. ( called word equation)
Example :
Zinc + dil. Sulphuric acid ➡ zinc sulphate+ hydrogen gas.
2. In terms of symbols and formulae (called chemical equation).
Example :
Zn + dil. H2SO4 ➡ ZnSO4 + H2
Definition- The short - hand method of representing a chemicsl equation in terms of symbols and formulae of the reactants and products is called a Chemical Equation.
▪ Writing of a chemical Reaction :
1. The symbols and formulae of the reactants are written on the Left hand side with plus (+) sign between them.
2. The symbols and formulae if the products are written on the right hand side with plus (+) sign between them.
3. An arrow (➡) sign is placed between the reactants and the products, prointing from reactants towards products.
So here we are done with the introduction part.
